Hose bibs protect your pipes from freezing- but only if you unhook your hose

If you own a home, you know that feeling of dread when, after a particularly cold night, you turn on the faucet and nothing happens. Frozen pipes happen frequently here in the Pacific Northwest region, especially where the water pipes lead outdoors to your lawn and in older homes that may not have adequate insulation in their crawl spaces. While having no water is a nuisance, the greater danger is that freezing will cause the pipes to burst and, when the temperature rises, you’ll have a big water mess to content with.

Hose bibs to protect your pipes

One easy way to protect your pipes during the cold weather season is to install hose bibs. These threaded faucets with a single valves are most commonly used for exterior faucets. However, these devices can also be installed on interior walls and can help to keep water from freezing in your pipes during a particularly cold period, by allowing you to shut off water to a vulnerable area of your home when the temperature is expected to drop. Hose bibs don’t have to be unsightly. They can be recessed into the wall or even hidden behind a panel.
