Keep up with changing thermostat technology

If you’re still using the thermostat you installed a decade (or more) ago, you’re missing an opportunity to save money and keep your home comfortable at the same time. New technology allows you to control the heat, air conditioning and other mechanical systems in your home right from your Smart phone or other digital device. You don’t even have to be at home.

Below are just a few interesting new thermostat products:

  • The Learning Thermostat. Nest Labs has created a thermostat that adjusts the temperature for maximum comfort by sensing how many people are in a room as well as remembering the family’s daily schedule.  Not only can this thermostat be accessed from any Internet-enabled device, but it automatically updates itself when new software becomes available.
  • WiFi enabled thermostats. The latest in programmable thermostats, several manufacturers offer devices that can be accessed remotely from any Internet-ready device and can be programmed for a different heating and/or cooling schedule for each of seven days.

Programmable thermostats with remote programming capability run from about $85 to more than $300. However, such devices can help you save both energy and money on your utility bills. You can turn the heat down while you’re away at work or school and turn the furnace up when you’re ready to arrive home.
