Foggy windows? Broken seals don’t always require new windows-replace the glass

Double pane windows can be a real energy saver. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that in the Pacific northwest, replacing your home’s single pane windows with double pane models can save the average homeowner up to $460 per year.

Double pane windows keep conditioned air inside where it belongs by using a gas barrier between the two window panes. However, over time the seal that holds the gas inside can break. This is often obvious because moisture becomes trapped inside the two panes, causing your windows to become foggy and have condensation.

Fixing foggy windows

The good news is that you don’t have to replace the entire window unit to fix a broken seal and solve your foggy window problem. The easiest way to fix your window is to have a trained contractor or repairman replace the seal and the value, expelling the moisture and condensation in the process. You can also have a window company replace just the one pane of glass where the seal is compromised. These repairs are generally not a DIY project, but can be easily accomplished by a skilled window contractor or handyman.
